Planning Your Day
—
🚗 A rental car unlocks every corner of the island — on your schedule
Honest answer: it depends on your plans, group size, and which island you're visiting.
💡
For most cruise day-trippers on St. Thomas: taxis and safari buses are cheaper and easier for single-destination trips like Magens Bay or Charlotte Amalie. A rental car makes the most sense for families of 4+, people who want to explore multiple spots, or anyone visiting St. John or St. Croix where taxis are expensive for longer distances.
✓
Rent a car if...You have a family of 4+ and want to visit 2–3 destinations. You're going to St. John (rentals give you freedom to hit every north shore beach). You're on St. Croix and want to go from Frederiksted to Christiansted and back on your own schedule. Or you just want the flexibility to stop wherever you like.
✗
Skip the rental if...You're only going to one beach and coming straight back. You're a small group of 1–2 people (taxis are cheaper). You're nervous about driving on the left on steep, narrow mountain roads. Or your ship departs before 4pm — pickup and return logistics can cut into your beach time.
🛣️ Rules of the Road in the USVI
Read this before you get behind the wheel.
⚠️
Drive on the LEFT side of the road. This is the single most important thing to remember. The USVI drives British-style — left side, left turns yield, right turns are the "easy" turn. Most accidents involving tourists happen at intersections and after distractions.
1
Left side, alwaysEven though cars have the steering wheel on the left (like the US mainland), you drive on the left side of the road. This trips up visitors constantly, especially coming out of parking lots and making right turns.
2
Speed limits are low20 mph in town, 35 mph on most main roads. The roads are narrow, steep, and winding — you wouldn't want to go faster anyway. Give yourself plenty of time between destinations.
3
Seatbelts required for all passengersUSVI law requires all vehicle occupants to wear a seatbelt. Child car seats are required for children under 5 — rental companies can provide them, but book in advance.
4
Your US driver's license is validA valid US state driver's license is all you need to rent and drive in the USVI. Foreign visitors with a license in the Roman alphabet can also drive without an International Driving Permit.
5
Roads are steep and narrowSt. Thomas and St. John have mountain roads with sharp switchbacks, limited guardrails, and limited passing room. An SUV or Jeep handles these better than a small economy car.
6
Gas stations are limitedFill up whenever you see a gas station — especially on St. John, where options are very limited. Gas prices are higher than the mainland, typically $4–5+ per gallon.
7
Minimum age is 23–25Most rental companies in the USVI require drivers to be at least 23 years old, and some charge a young driver surcharge for those under 25. Passenger vans and luxury vehicles typically require age 25+.

All St. John rental companies are based in Cruz Bay, a short walk from the ferry dock. You must ferry from St. Thomas first (Red Hook → Cruz Bay, 20 min, $8/person). Book your rental in advance — St. John has a small fleet and vehicles book out fast, especially in peak season. Most companies require age 25+ and a minimum 2–4 day rental.
🚙
Jeep or 4WD strongly recommended. St. John's roads are steep, unpaved in places, and not suited for low-clearance vehicles. A Jeep Wrangler or Toyota RAV4 is the standard choice. Most companies won't rent you a sedan for good reason.

Cruise ships dock at Frederiksted Pier. Budget has a location at the pier on ship arrival days (limited availability). Most companies are based near the airport (STX) or in Christiansted and offer pickup. St. Croix is the flattest USVI island — a regular car works fine, though an SUV is still comfortable.

⛴️
Budget at least 90 minutes for round-trip ferry transport from St. Thomas. If your ship departs at 5pm, take the 8am ferry to maximize time. Pick up your Jeep in Cruz Bay and go — St. John is only 9 miles long.
🌊
North Shore Beach Crawl

Pick up Jeep and head east on Centerline Road through the national park
9:45 AM

💡 Coral Bay and Salt Pond are the "real St. John" that most cruise passengers never see. A Jeep is the only practical way to get there.
🚢
Pick up your rental at the Frederiksted Pier (Budget on ship days) or arrange pickup from your rental company. St. Croix is 28 miles long and 7 miles wide — the roads are easier than St. Thomas, with gentler grades and more room to maneuver.

❓ Rental Car FAQ
Common questions from first-time USVI renters.
No. Rental cars rented in the USVI cannot cross into the British Virgin Islands. The BVI is a separate country and USVI rental agreements explicitly prohibit taking vehicles there. If you're visiting Tortola or Virgin Gorda, you'll need to take a ferry.
Some companies allow it, most don't. Budget St. Thomas explicitly permits it. Most local companies prohibit taking their vehicles on the car ferry. Always ask before booking if this is your plan. The car ferry runs from Red Hook (east end of St. Thomas) to Cruz Bay — but given that St. John has excellent local jeep rentals, it's usually easier to rent separately on St. John.
No, if your license is from the US or from a country that uses the Roman alphabet. A valid driver's license from any US state is fully recognized in the USVI. Non-English licenses not in the Roman alphabet require an International Driving Permit.
Check your credit card first — many premium credit cards (Chase Sapphire, Amex, etc.) include collision damage waiver coverage when you pay for the rental with that card. If you have this, you may be able to decline the rental company's CDW. Your personal auto insurance may also extend coverage to rentals. Call your card and insurer before declining coverage — rental companies will charge you the full cost of any damage otherwise.
Most companies require a minimum age of 23–25 years old. Drivers under 25 often face a young driver surcharge ($15–25/day). Passenger vans and luxury vehicles typically require 25+. Check with your specific company before booking.
Some rental companies provide GPS units — ask when booking. Cell service and data coverage is generally good across St. Thomas and St. Croix with major US carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon) — Google Maps works well. St. John has spottier coverage in remote areas; download an offline map before you arrive.
Not strictly necessary, but strongly recommended. The main roads are paved, but they're steep with sharp switchbacks. A higher-clearance SUV handles the mountain roads much more comfortably than a small economy car. On St. John, a Jeep or 4WD is essentially required — some roads are unpaved and steep.
There's a parking lot at Waterfront (near the ferry dock) and street parking along Veteran's Drive. In-town parking is limited on busy ship days — arrive early. Havensight Mall has parking if you want to walk into Charlotte Amalie from there instead. Budget about 10–15 minutes to find a spot on busy days.
Budget is at Havensight — a short walk from the WICO dock. For other companies, most offer free pickup from both Havensight and Crown Bay — call them before disembarking to arrange. Some may also offer a free shuttle. The airport is about 10 minutes by taxi ($7 from Havensight) if you're renting from an airport-based company.
All rental companies provide a roadside assistance or emergency contact number — get it before you drive away. Budget and major chains include roadside assistance in their contracts. Local companies vary. Cell service is generally available across St. Thomas for calling for help. Make sure you have the rental company's local number programmed in your phone before you leave.
Some companies allow after-hours returns with a key drop box — confirm when you pick up. If you're on a cruise ship, make sure your return time is at least 60–90 minutes before your all-aboard time to account for any delays. Cruise ships do not wait for late-returning passengers.
For a family of 4 visiting multiple spots, a rental car often wins. Example: taxis for 4 people to Magens Bay ($48 round trip) + Coki Beach ($40 round trip) = $88+ and you're locked into the taxi's schedule. A rental SUV for 6 hours might run $45–55 — and you have total freedom. For 1–2 people making a single beach trip, taxis are cheaper.
